This study examines the effect of a low-protein diet during pregnancy on the development of the rat foetal brain. The researchers demonstrated that this restriction altered the accessibility of certain regions of DNA in neuronal precursor cells in the hypothalamus, a region important for metabolism and appetite regulation. These findings suggest that maternal nutrition may influence gene regulation and, consequently, long-term metabolic health. However, further research is needed to understand these mechanisms and their relevance to humans.
